This Python Tries To Swallow A Possum On The Road

A 2 meter long python engulfing a possum for meal caught the attention of a passing cyclist who was riding along the side of the road. As rider Adrian Brand came and started taking pictures, Brisbane locals flocked around this chaotic spectacle.

Mr. Brand guessed that the possum had fallen from the tree. It would have been dozing off when the python ambushed it. It was dying from suffocation.

When Brand arrived on the sᴄᴇɴᴇ for the first time, the possum was still alive. He relocated the snake off the road by picking it up. In the image below, you can see how the snake clung tenaciously to its prey as it was relocated.

Aᴜsᴛʀᴀʟɪᴀ is home to possums, which are marsupials. One of their frequent predators, pythons, profit from the marsupials’ departure from the shelter of the trees to ᴀᴛᴛᴀᴄᴋ. These kinds of sightings have increased as roads are built and encroach on possum habitats.

The length of a carpet python can reach three meters. Although they usually prey on possums, rodents, and occasionally household pets, they are not ᴘᴏɪsᴏɴᴏᴜs to people. The upper and lower lips of the carpet python have heat-sensitive pits that let them sense their prey’s body heat.
